My Story

This is MY Story. 2 Weeks after my 32nd birthday, on Valentine's Day, I was at work when I got the phone call that I had breast cancer. I had never been punched in the gut so hard in my life. Grace was only 6, Kevin at work in Chicago at the time. It didn't take long for the girls at work to realize I had locked myself in my office. They were helping me pull my shit together when the door bell rang and a beautiful bouquet of roses appeared at the door. Kevin, alway there for me, even from hundreds of miles away. The poor delivery guy looked a little nervous because he could tell I was crying. He let out a very shaky "Happy Valentine's Day" and I assured him his timing was a God send.

The next few weeks were a bit overwhelming, doctor appointments, tests, where do I go to get the best treatment, who's hands do I put my life in.

Stage 2B Invasive Ductal Carcinoma: Tumor Size: 4.5 cm, 2 of 16 lymph node involvement: 2 Surgeries, 8 chemo treatments, and 36 radiation treatments later, I was a defeated shell of my former self. Trying to regain some sort of normal life, someone mentioned doing the Susan G. Koman Walk. I worried about being capable of walking that far but Kevin, Grace, Laura and Lindsay and others who joined us that day, helped encourage me. It was incredible to be a part of something so incredible. Thousands of people walking in honor or in memory of someone just like me. The number of people and families that this disease affects is enormous. It made me feel like my family was not alone in this fight.

A few months after the walk, I was invited to be part of the Susan G Komen group that stood on the field at Ralph Wilson Statdium to bring on the Bills before the Crucial Catch game. Survivors of all ages spent about an hour together. We met Roger Goodell, a few of the Bills players, but the most incredible part was we became this incredible support group in minutes. We talked about our stories, we laughed, cried and carried eachother through that tunnel with our pompoms in hand, dancing and cheering for the Buffalo Bills in front of thousand of people. We created a support group on facebook and years later, we add people and check in when people are struggling with something. Breast cancer does not go away after treatment, treatment never ends. It becomes a part of your life. Susan G. Komen is more than just a walk to support Breast Cancer. It creates a sisterhood like no other. At the Susan G. Komen walk I will celebrate 9 years of remission. Join me and my family walking or donate, it is worth it.
